Mouse Q & A with Dr. Gary...

What are the most common mice in New England?

The Deer mouse and the White-Footed mouse.

What do they eat?

Anything they can get hold of! It is important to note that most mice come inside to over-winter with us. To them our homes are just hollow trees. They can get and store all the food they need from the “natural” environment.

Do they really carry and spread disease?

Yes.  Food poisoning (from Salmonella primarily) from droppings is probably the greatest threat. Hanta virus can also be a big one – but primarily in drier environments. Allergies are huge. Mouse urinary proteins can trigger severe asthma in children and others. Mice have minute (some say none at all) bladders and pee thousands of times a day (called microdroplets). So, they are not good critters to live with! It is also estimated that over 25% of all (house) fires are caused by mice. They strip the insulations from wires.

Will they bite?

Yes, but serious bites are more common with rats. Just like any animal, a mouse will bite when cornered and nobody wants that.   The good news?  Miice and rats can get rabies, but can’t transmit it.

How big of an opening do mice need to enter a house?

¼ inch. Any place you can put a pen or pencil through.

I’ve heard that steel wool is the best “stuffing” to plug holes in the home. Should that be followed up with some kind of sealant?

Stuff-it (copper mesh – which we use A LOT) is better because it doesn't break down. You don’t have to seal or caulk over it. I like the fact that it can be temporary or permanent.  If hubby comes home and doesn’t like it he can pull it out easily, with no damage.

If you release a mouse, how far away should you drop it off to avoid the critter coming right back in?

Buy it a one-way ticket to LA! Relocating mice is a waste of time. A mouse will return from a mile or more away – if it survives – because it is trying to find a place to live. A mouse may eventually find its way “home” to you and your family!
