Termite Protection

New Hampshire Termite Control Specialists JP Pest Services - Pest Management Solutions for Termites

Understanding termites and selecting a control option can be a very daunting task for homeowners who want to know the details and make informed decisions.  The web is full of contradictory (and sometimes contentious) information regarding the control of this particular pest.  This is due to the large amounts of money in play for the manufacturers of termite control products.  Each is jockeying to position their product with very slick marketing materials as “The Best” solution based on some novel feature (and sometimes dubious research).  The confusion is then compounded by the fact that not all pest control companies have access to the same products.  So the stage is set for homeowners to be completely baffled by wildly different solutions and prices presented by passionate, persuasive (and commissioned) salespeople who are determined to get their agreements signed and disappear into the sunset.

We do not operate that way.  We realized long ago that great execution of service by knowledgeable technicians is what solves a termite problem.  We do not use salespeople.  Our clients meet with our termite department manager and design the most appropriate solution for their structure.  Our product selection process considers effectiveness, customer preferences and the environment.  Our service plan is then executed by highly trained, professional termite control technicians.

JP Pest Services is a third generation, family owned company that has been in the pest control business since 1925.

We’ve been in the termite control business two or three times as long as anybody else in New Hampshire.  It has always been a core competency of this company and we train continuously to ensure that our techniques and information are cutting edge.  Our standard is 100% continuous effectiveness.  We achieve this by matching the advantages of the top termite control products in the world to the particular challenges of the structure we are trying to protect.

The Old Way:  Prior to 1995, the only means of performing subterranean termite control was to treat the soil beneath and around the structure with special persistent chemicals called liquid termiticides.  To accomplish this, holes were drilled through the concrete basement and garage floors every twelve to sixteen inches around the entire interior perimeter. Chemical was injected under pressure through the holes; and the holes were then plugged and patched with concrete.  A containment trench was then dug around the exterior of the house and more chemical was injected into the soil outside the foundation as deeply as possible to establish a continuous treated zone.  The goal of this process was to make the soil around and beneath the structure toxic to termites.  This was known as the Liquid Barrier technique and it was not uncommon to use three hundred and fifty gallons of chemical in treating a typical home.

In addition to all the inconvenience, disruption and intense chemical use, this type of treatment has another very significant drawback.   It is temporary.  The chemicals steadily decline in effectiveness as they degrade over time.  Eventually you have nothing to stop the termites and you have to reapply the chemicals to protect the structure in the future.  Sound horrifying?  It was.  Incredibly, some companies are still using variations of this method today with neveau names such as the Treated Zone technique despite the development of newer alternative technologies that work better and eliminate all of the disadvantages associated with liquid treatments.

The Sentricon System

In 1995 we were part of a small group of companies that were selected from around the country to pioneer a new product and control concept that has revolutionized termite control forever.  This product single-handedly redefined effectiveness, created a new paradigm in approach, converted termite control into an environmentally friendly process and placed the Liquid Barrier technique firmly in the Museum of Ancient History where it belongs.  The product that has made all this possible is the Sentricon Colony Elimination System from Dow AgroSciences.

The Sentricon System employs a totally different philosophy of control that has come to be known as Termite Baiting.  In this process we leverage the aggressive foraging and social food sharing behavior of attacking termites to kill their colonies and prevent future infestation.

The concept is stunningly simple.  We feed the worker termites an active ingredient that is proven to spread throughout the colony (through their natural biological processes) resulting in colony elimination.  The process is begun by applying the specially formulated Recruit termite bait, containing the active ingredient Noviflumuron directly to the known areas that are active with termites.  The bait matrix is a material that is highly preferred by termites, even more so than wood.  In this way we can quickly control the attacking colonies (as quickly as 21 days).  At the same time we install special in ground monitoring stations around the exterior perimeter of the structure and in likely termite foraging areas.  These stations will help us detect and control the other, unknown number of colonies that may be foraging within or around the outside of the structure, forever!   The stations contain special monitors that we can check electronically for termite activity during our regularly scheduled site visits.  These stations help us to eliminate the termite colonies that forage around the perimeter of the structure.  We can add active ingredient to these stations any time they become active.
