Read on to find out how to get rid of flour beetles, what they like to eat, how they get into your pantry, how to clean your pantry and how to protect yourself and your family by preventing the pests from coming back.

Getting Rid of Flour Beetles in the Pantry

The best way to get rid of flour beetles is to get rid of the food they contaminate. Then clean your pantry, and prevent them from returning: remove food from paper/cardboard packaging and freeze/ store it in airtight containers.

What Are the Risks of Flour Beetles?

While the risk from flour beetles is very low, their impact is deeply unpleasant.

Flour beetles hide in our kitchen cabinets, and they love to dine on everything from dried grains to pasta, cake mix to milk powder.

Our food isn’t just contaminated by them being in it. What they eat has to go somewhere. So it’s also contaminated by their fecal pellets, foul-smelling discharge, and, ultimately, their dead bodies. The stench and carcasses can also encourage mold growth in and around the pantry.

They are one of the few insects that use food as their shelter. So they’ll survive the winter by hiding in our grains and in warm places around heat sources in our homes. A red flour beetle is only ⅛ of an inch, and can survive for over three years. If undetected, it could spend its whole life cycle in a cereal or pasta box.

How Do Flour Beetles Get Into My Pantry?

Flour beetles have usually been brought in accidentally from grocery store goods. When you bought them, they would probably already have been inside the food or its packaging.

Red flour beetles like to attach themselves to packaging and can get into almost anything: paper packages, plastic, cardboard boxes, and even foil-wrapped food.

Once they find your food, they will rapidly multiply. As they are so small, you may not see them until you have a full-fledged flour beetle infestation.

What Should I Do with My Infected Food?

Red flour beetles contaminate more food than they actually eat. But once you’ve discovered them, the best thing is to throw any contaminated food away.

What Should I Do if I’ve Eaten a Flour Beetle?

Don’t worry. It may be that there were a few of them in your dried fruit, and you and your family didn’t notice. Here’s why you shouldn’t worry:

  • Flour beetles are not dangerous. They are interested in our food, not us. We are not on their menu.
  • It’s very rare that you’ll get sick by accidentally ingesting them. But if you do become sick, call a doctor.

How to Clean Up Your Pantry

  1. Throw away any infested food
  2. Vacuum any cracks or crevices in your pantry or spice cabinet
  3. Clean up spills and crumbs that may build up over time
  4. Put any infested food garbage outside until it’s disposed of as flour beetles can chew through plastic
  5. Freeze any food that you think may be a target for beetles

How to Prevent Flour Beetles in Your Pantry

The next time you shop after you’ve cleaned out your pantry:
1. Inspect the food packaging: don’t buy it if you see any holes, tears, or crumbs around it
2. Store your bought food in air-tight containers
3. Recycle any cardboard boxes and paper packaging that the food comes in

This way you’ll keep beetles away and lengthen the life of dry ingredients. So you’ll have a much better chance of eating the food you bought before the beetles do.
