The vast majority of common New England spiders are harmless and play a valuable role in controlling insect populations. However, a small number of species found across Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont are worth knowing about, due to the anxiety they can cause, the speed at which they can spread, and, in rare cases, the risk to human health.
Two species in particular stand out. The northern black widow is the region's only spider considered genuinely venomous, capable of delivering a bite that can cause significant discomfort and, in vulnerable individuals, more serious symptoms. The yellow sac spider is arguably the more common species of the two, and is responsible for the majority of spider bites across the region. Understanding these species and knowing when to call in professional help is the first step to keeping your home protected.
